World Travelers Use Technology to Build With Signature Custom Homes

When Shelley and William Harris decided to build a custom home in Las Vegas, they knew it would be more challenging for them than most families. The Harris’ were living in Thailand. With the help of Signature Custom Homes, they designed and built their dream home.

“My friends said I had to be crazy to build a home from halfway around the world, but I never thought twice about it,” said Shelley Harris, owner of a new Signature Custom Home in Seven Hills. “If Signature Custom Homes hadn’t been sophisticated with technology, it wouldn’t have worked. But they were great. They emailed me documents to sign, posted photos on a website they created for us and even produced short videos during different phases of the construction process.”

Signature Custom Homes’ vice president of operations Brian Plaster personally created short videos throughout the Harris’ construction phase to keep the family up to date on progress at their home. “It made me feel like they really cared,” said Shelley. “From the vice president of operations of the company to the purchasing manager, I felt like everyone was as familiar with my home as I was.”

The family decided to build their retirement home in Las Vegas from Thailand because “the cost of building a home is not going down anytime soon,” said Shelley. “The cost of land, materials and everything else associated with building a new home is going up every year.” After making the decision to design their own home, the family set out to find a builder.

“We interviewed several builders and found Signature Custom Homes to be the best fit with our needs,” said Shelley.

Shelley said Signature’s reputation for custom homebuilding was stellar and she liked that its custom division was smaller than most. “We found they were people we could trust and really knew what they were doing. I really liked that our home was one of only a handful they were building at the time, not one of several hundred. It gave us much more personal attention during the entire process.”

During the home’s construction, which was completed in just under a year, the family visited Las Vegas only three times. “And our home was actually completed earlier than expected,” said Shelley.

Shelley contributes the streamlined schedule to spending more time up front in the design process. “If you’re going to undertake something like this from so far away, you need to take the time to make sure it is designed the way you want it,” she said. “We spent a lot of time in the design process because we knew if the house was properly designed and laid out on the lot, it would offer fantastic views of the city, the mountains and the golf course. All the time we spent up front to make sure our views were maximized was absolutely worth it.”
